This introductory talk on electrical safety, aimed at people at Department of Physics likely to make or adapt equipment that will be connected to the electricity mains supply

By the end of the session, participants should be able to:
- List the risks associated with mains electrical equipment
- Outline the legal requirements for working with electricity
- Locate appropriate guidance on safety requirements
- Explain different types of supply and their effect in contact with the human body
- Explain the basics of how to protect against electric shock
- Describe their own safety responsibilities for work with mains electrical equipment
- Identify when and where to obtain assistance with construction of equipment
This session aims to provide basic information on electrical equipment safety, in order to reduce the risk of people at the Department of Physics constructing or adapting items that could cause death or severe injury when connected to the mains electricity supply.
