An introduction to the UK Web archive – its purposes and what it collects. An initial training session for those who might be interested in contributing. Attending the training session will not commit you to contributing, but rather indicate to us who would like to be involved in further discussions.

• Dreamweaver is a powerful web creation tool that allows non-technical people to produce professional websites. This course provides a practical introduction for those that wish to use Dreamweaver to create web-pages and manage websites. It focuses on building a small website.

This follows on from the Web Authoring: HTML Introduction (Level 1) and is a practical-based course.

This is a practical-based course for anyone with a basic understanding of HTML. The course will introduce Cascading Style Sheets (CSS) and show how they can (and should) be used effectively when creating web pages. The course teaches how to write CSS from scratch using a basic Text Editor. By the end of the course participants will have adapted a small website consisting of three pages so that it is styled using a single Cascading Style Sheet. Course participants will have the opportunity to publish these using DS-Web.

This is a practical-based course for people new to writing Web pages. Only the basics of HTML (hypertext mark-up language) will be covered, but there are other courses for those wishing to extend their knowledge. The course teaches how to write HTML from scratch using a basic Text Editor and focuses on content and structure as opposed to style. By the end of the course participants will have created three personal linked web pages and had the opportunity to publish these using DS-Web.

This is an introductory practical-based programming course aimed at web authors already familiar with coding simple HTML and CSS. Course participants will learn the basic principles of programming using JavaScript and by the end of the course will have adapted (by editing pre-written JavaScript) three personal linked web pages to manipulate some dynamic content and user interaction. Additionally, course participants will and have the opportunity to publish their finished website using DS-Web.

This webinar is aimed at all ESRC DTP cohorts. The information and advice will be focused around managing your studentship in relation to time planning, managing your health, and understanding how your ESRC funding works. In particular, UKRI research councils are limited in their flexibility around extensions and it is important that all DTP PhD researchers are aware of these limitations but also know about the other resources they can potentially utilise at Cambridge to help them through the three years of their doctorate.

We encourage everyone to attend. In addition, anyone who has health difficulties should come along to understand how this could impact on their PhD timeline and how planning at an early stage could be helpful.

This course covers the new functionality regarding recording an offer in release 4 of web recruitment.

Web scraping has great potential as a research tool that can be applied across various fields of research including social science and humanities, and allows us to reach beyond the ‘quantitative and qualitative divide’. The programming and code-reading/analysing skills used in web scraping can enhance our understanding of digital power beyond the traditional limits of computing techniques.

This two-hour training module (plus 1-hour online Q&A session) introduces researchers to how to use Python software for web scraping. You will learn what web scraping means, the principles behind it, and ethical considerations, and importantly how to use Python to achieve web scraping. The module provides a good opportunity to learn how to enhance your coding and code-reading skills, from which you can reflect on how digital power especially web scraping and coding is shaping contemporary research. The training is programming beginner friendly.

The first stage comprises the University’s Induction Online programme. This web resource is a quick and easy way for you to learn all about what it is like to work here as well as understand your role and responsibilities. It provides key information to help you:

The second stage is a Welcome to New Staff presentation event, hosted by Personal and Professional Development (PPD). This day-long workshop will provide incoming doctoral students with essential information and resources that will help them navigate the complexities of doctoral research, foster productive relationships, and take advantage of the educational and developmental opportunities available to them during their studies. You will have the opportunity to hear from Postgraduate Researcher Development team, Careers, Public Engagement, Research Integrity, Wellbeing, and the University Library.

This is also an excellent opportunity to meet fellow PhD students from outside their Department/Faculty. By the end of this session, students should feel more settled and confident in taking their first steps into doctoral research.

Please note, this event is intended to complement local Departmental and Faculty inductions and also RD workshops such as ‘Starting your PhD’ or ‘Working with your Supervisor’.

Ideas and resources for those working with or caring for young people. A set of ideas and techniques for Young People to put into practice and facilitate their own self regulated wellbeing resilience. Some of these are creative and practical activities, others are from trauma informed yoga and mindfulness.
