Change is a constant feature in today’s workplace and yet many of us find it hard to navigate successfully through change.

Studies show that the line manager has a critical role to play in ensuring staff are ready for change and in successfully implementing it. These sessions will equip you with the skills and attitudes you need to guide, support and motivate your team through the process of change.

Case studies, discussion and activities will provide the opportunity to share ideas and embed skills.

This course gives a simple introduction to organizing your data in a relational database. It aims to explain the arranging of your data. It does not deal with specific relational databases systems such as Access, Oracle or SQL Server, or the technical tools that you would or could use to set up your database. The course aims to provide you with enough information to sit down and design your database, regardless of the database product that you intend to use. Exercises will be done on paper, without using computers.

Using close reading and translation of academic texts from their particular discipline, this weekly class is intended to help research students in the Arts, Humanities & Social Sciences to develop their skills in reading French documents that they have come across or may meet in their research.

The course aims to develop strategies for reading longer texts faster through close analysis, grammatical and stylistic commentary, and translation. For example, literary texts with differing editions, stories with two or more translations into English that need to be compared and evaluated, poems of challenging originality or range of allusion.

Classes will be conducted in English, but there will be many opportunities to use French and practise reading aloud.

Funding Management Portal (FMP) Roadshows 2023 new Finished 11:00 - 11:45 Online Live Training

The Postgraduate Funding Project is working towards a big release in the Funding Management Portal in June 2023 and this roadshow will give colleagues an overview of the changes and benefits they can expect following the release. The roadshow will include contributions by the project’s sponsors, Prof Bhaskar Vira, Pro-Vice Chancellor for Education, and Mike Nicholson, Deputy Head of Education Services, situating the project’s work in the context of the University’s wider strategic aims and highlighting the positive impact it will have for both applicants and staff who engage with the system.

The June release will allow colleagues to use the Funding Management Portal to:

  • Configure and collect funding applications through the Applicant Portal (GAP)
  • Find eligible applicants for their funds
  • Shortlist and share applications
  • Assess applications for funding
  • Update other funders in real time

The Funding Management Portal will also bring together all the information required for making informed decisions, such as real-time information about admissions statuses, other funders’ activities and applicants’ TOAST scores.

CLIC: Inter-Communication: First impression counts new Finished 12:00 - 14:00 Department of Engineering, James Dyson Building, Teaching Room

Humans have been relying on non-verbal signals for understanding long before we started using languages. That means, that our unconscious brain is still attuned to it and is working very hard every time you communicate with someone. First impressions are built in seconds!

In this session, you will learn about the basics of non-verbal communication (such as posture, eye contact, voice and more), will learn how to use body language to project confidence, build rapport and increase presence both physically and virtually.

This workshop will be delivered in a hybrid format. Feel free to join online or in person.

If you join in person a sandwich lunch will be provided. Please let us know if you're attending in person and any dietary requirements by 26th April.

  • funding schemes and resources to inform and support develop projects, events and activities

These sessions are not workshops or taught sessions.

Based on your area of expertise and depending on your School affiliation, you can book a time with one of our public engagement professionals:

This conversation hour offers learners with an independent conversational ability (B2 level upwards) a chance to practise speaking French with others in a relaxed and informal group led by a native-speaker facilitator. The content of the sessions is decided by the participants, with members taking turns to propose a topic and source materials (newspaper articles, web-links, videos etc.) to use as a basis for discussion. The groups are ideal for those who wish to retain or improve upon the language skills they already have or for those studying for a language degree who would like another forum for interaction at advanced level.

Participants from French Advanced CULP are warmly invited to attend the French Conversation Hour.

Anyone who is a first-time user of unsealed radioactive substances is expected to attend this acquaintanceship course before they begin the work. Users of radioactive substances who are new to the University should also attend. This course also acts as a refresher for experienced users and for users from other institutions or countries. There will be time for discussion and questions at the end of the session. You will be required to complete a short quiz after the course to confirm your understanding of core aspects of radiation safety.

This course will introduce the new generation of molecules, including novel peptides, oligonucleotides, hybrids, and molecular conjugates, that are enabling novel strategies to address challenging targets and biological processes. This workshop will review these next generation therapeutics, and will highlight progress in this area towards a range of novel drug candidates.

Postdoc Academy Masterclass: Time and Focus new Finished 14:00 - 15:00 Online

Would you like to focus better on the work that is important to you? Do you find you have too many distractions and struggle to prioritise?

In this 1-hour online session, you will learn techniques to help you:

  • enhance your focus on your most important work
  • reduce distraction and prioritise more effectively
  • establish daily habits to relieve stress, reduce self-criticism and strengthen resilience
  • create space to recognise your achievements each day.

The session is followed by a 4-day Nudge Course. This provides one technique per day to help you convert the techniques you’ve learned into useful habits.

For 48 hours following the session, you will also have the opportunity to contact Joy, a mental health nurse with over 40 years’ experience. Joy will offer a confidential listening ear and signpost you to further support.

This session will provide:

A presentation from Trish Gallagher (Student Services Centre Support Team Manager) about the fees paid to examiners, how they should be determined (including use of the calculator) and an opportunity to ask questions.
