This course gives a simple introduction to organizing your data in a relational database. It aims to explain the arranging of your data. It does not deal with specific relational databases systems such as Access, Oracle or SQL Server, or the technical tools that you would or could use to set up your database. The course aims to provide you with enough information to sit down and design your database, regardless of the database product that you intend to use. Using close reading and translation of academic texts from their particular discipline, this weekly class is intended to help research students in the Arts, Humanities & Social Sciences to develop their skills in reading French documents that they have come across or may meet in their research. The course aims to develop strategies for reading longer texts faster through close analysis, grammatical and stylistic commentary, and translation. For example, literary texts with differing editions, stories with two or more translations into English that need to be compared and evaluated, poems of challenging originality or range of allusion. The Postgraduate Funding Project is working towards a big release in the Funding Management Portal in June 2023 and this roadshow will give colleagues an overview of the changes and benefits they can expect following the release. The roadshow will include contributions by the project’s sponsors, Prof Bhaskar Vira, Pro-Vice Chancellor for Education, and Mike Nicholson, Deputy Head of Education Services, situating the project’s work in the context of the University’s wider strategic aims and highlighting the positive impact it will have for both applicants and staff who engage with the system. Humans have been relying on non-verbal signals for understanding long before we started using languages. That means, that our unconscious brain is still attuned to it and is working very hard every time you communicate with someone. First impressions are built in seconds! In this session, you will learn about the basics of non-verbal communication (such as posture, eye contact, voice and more), will learn how to use body language to project confidence, build rapport and increase presence both physically and virtually. This workshop will be delivered in a hybrid format. Feel free to join online or in person. If you join in person a sandwich lunch will be provided. The team will be available every week, each mentor offering two sessions of 30 minutes in the day and time indicated above. We will release new slots in the same days and times a couple of months in advance. Please book for the day and time you would like to attend, and you will receive closer to the session the Teams link to meet with the mentor. Please note that the Conversation Hours will be delivered online This conversation hour offers learners with an independent conversational ability (B2 level upwards) a chance to practise speaking French with others in a relaxed and informal group led by a native-speaker facilitator. The content of the sessions is decided by the participants, with members taking turns to propose a topic and source materials (newspaper articles, web-links, videos etc.) to use as a basis for discussion. The groups are ideal for those who wish to retain or improve upon the language skills they already have or for those studying for a language degree who would like another forum for interaction at advanced level. Participants from French Advanced CULP are warmly invited to attend the French Conversation Hour. Anyone who is a first-time user of unsealed radioactive substances is expected to attend this acquaintanceship course before they begin the work. Users of radioactive substances who are new to the University should also attend. This course also acts as a refresher for experienced users and for users from other institutions or countries. There will be time for discussion and questions at the end of the session. You will be required to complete a short quiz after the course to confirm your understanding of core aspects of radiation safety. The session is followed by a 4-day Nudge Course. This provides one technique per day to help you convert the techniques you’ve learned into useful habits. For 48 hours following the session, you will also have the opportunity to contact Joy, a mental health nurse with over 40 years’ experience. Joy will offer a confidential listening ear and signpost you to further support. |

In this workshop we will explore various ways to develop clarity in academic writing, and we will work through a number of example texts in order to gain practical experience of improving the clarity of written work. No explicit preparation is required for this workshop, but you may find it useful to bring a piece of your own writing with you. |
