This online course offers a short introduction to data protection concepts, explains why they are important to the University, and signposts to further guidance materials. As nearly all University staff are likely to collect and handle personal information about living identifiable individuals in one way or another, it’s important to have a basic understanding of the main issues.
All staff using personal data in some way in their role are expected, as a baseline, to complete this online course as part of their induction and thereafter once every two years. Supplementary expectations about data protection training in different areas of the University are set by Heads of Department (and equivalents). While the online course primarily is aimed at staff, it is also suitable for students needing or wishing to complete basic data protection training.
The content of this course reflects the provisions of current data protection law in the UK.
The Global Talent visa is an alternative visa route for our academic and research staff. This short course explains the benefits of this visa type as an viable alternative to the Skilled worker visa route, details the eligibility for this visa, the application process, and where there are crossovers with University recruitment practices.
This course is recommended for those responsible for the recruitment and selection of staff, particularly if you are new to the University but also for existing staff seeking a refresher.
In January 2021 the government launched a new immigration system applicable to new arrivals of EU and non-EU nationals on an equal basis. The new system is loosely based on the previous immigration system (Tier 2 etc.), but with some changes.
The course will outline the two key visa routes used by the University in its recruitment of international staff – the Skilled Worker Visa and the Global Talent Visa. The aim of this course is to help those involved with recruitment and selection to navigate the rules which regulate the recruitment of individuals via these two visa routes, whilst ensuring full compliance.

This session will provide an overview of these changes, along with general guidance on the visitor visa/entry process. The session will also introduce and explain the Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) system, new will be a new requirement for non-UK visitors to the UK in 2024.
Please note that this session will be recorded. There will be an opportunity to discuss points and ask questions once the recording has ended.

Effective risk management enables the University to identify, assess and seize opportunities which assist in the delivery of its objectives and improve its performance, whilst protecting the reputation and sustainability of the University. The University is committed to ensuring that it has a robust and comprehensive system of risk management in line with the requirements of the Office for Students.
This interactive tutorial provides an introduction to the principles of risk management at the University of Cambridge. The course will give you an introduction to risk management, help you to understand why risk management is necessary and point to some practical tools and guidance to support you in managing risks.
The University has a statutory duty to have ‘due regard to prevent people from being drawn into terrorism’. This is known as the Prevent Duty (Section 26 of the Counter-Terrorism and Security Act 2015). It is primarily about safeguarding students and staff in the University and includes a range of responsibilities in areas such as pastoral care, support for staff and students, procedures for arranging events and using facilities. All staff need to be aware of the process of radicalisation, definitions of extremism and the process for raising concerns in this context.
This online module (approx. 45 minutes) provides information about Prevent for all staff working in the University. It is to be used alongside the guidance information, including how to raise a concern in this context, on the University Prevent website.

The last two years before retirement are a good time to prepare for personal change in readiness for leaving employment. We offer two different pre-retirement courses and recommend that you book on to both.
This course includes detailed information on finance, planning and tax and legal issues. You will have the opportunity to share information and discuss any concerns about retirement in a relaxed setting.
Legal Advisors from Barr Ellison, Cambridge will explore some of the key legal issues that you may wish to consider when approaching retirement i.e. Wills, Trusts and Lasting Power of Attorney.
A Financial Advisor from Dartington Wealth will give a detailed overview of the different ways in which you may wish to consider managing your retirement income. They will give details of how tax is collected in retirement and answer questions.
HR colleagues will outline the possible options for retirement for Established staff and the processes involved with each option, as well as the actions that need to be taken.

The University will shortly be re-launching the Screening Policy. This briefing session will provide staff with an overview of the policy, how it will be implemented and the impact this will have on recruitment.

This course is recommended for any members of faculties and departments who are involved in student administration. The University is required to ensure compliance with the responsibilities of its student sponsor licence, granted by the Home Office to provide visa sponsorship for international students. The aim of the course is to provide an overview of the immigration regulations affecting students, with a focus on the requirements for visiting students and the practicalities of supporting this activity within the Cambridge context.
Following a recent announcement by the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCO), the Academic Technology Approval Scheme (ATAS) will be expanded to international researchers as well as international students.
The ATAS scheme currently applies to certain international students who require a visa to study in the UK and are intending to study at postgraduate level in certain sensitive subjects which may be “against the UK’s national interests”, predominately in programmes to develop Advanced Conventional Military Technology (ACMT), weapons of mass destruction (WMDs) or their means of delivery.
From 21 May 2021, the ATAS will be extended to cover ‘researchers’ intending to work in the UK in areas of research in these same sensitive areas. The ATAS requirement will only affect those applying for Skilled Worker, Tier 5 GAE and visitor visas.
The briefings is run by Graeme Ross, Immigration and Compliance Manager for the HR Division. The briefing covers the known areas of guidance on how the scheme will operate, who will be eligible for an ATAS certificate, and the potential impacts on recruitment and immigration at the University.
The salary threshold for Skilled Worker visa applicants are due to increase from 4th April 2024. The Rules outlining these changes will be published on 14th March, and this briefing will provide a detailed overview of these changes and potential impacts on new starters after 4th April.
