All-provider course timetable

This one-day course is primarily aimed at life science researchers, but covers many topics that are applicable to other fields. It combines key theoretical knowledge with practical application, which will aid researchers in designing effective experiments. The focus throughout the course is to link experimental design to a clear analysis strategy. This ensures that the collected data will be suitable for statistical analysis. During this course, we cover:

• Practices in experimental design that lead to high quality research
• Common design pitfalls, and how to avoid or mitigate them
• A brief introduction to more advanced analysis techniques for experiments with unusual or complex designs

Topics included in the course include: crafting a good research question, operationalising variables effectively, identifying and dealing with confounding variables and pseudoreplication, and practical tips for power analysis and piloting.

The course is delivered via a mix of lectures, group discussion and worked examples.

If you are a newly appointed Departmental Safety Officer (DSO), this course will give you all the essential information you need to understand your new role - what the role involves and what is doesn’t. We will introduce the key topics of Health and Safety that you will be working with and have plenty of opportunity to discuss any queries that you have. The course should be completed within 3 months of being appointed as a DSO. Space permitting, we also welcome current DSOs and others with a health and safety role.

• funding schemes and resources to inform and support develop projects, events and activities

Successful public engagement can benefit research, researchers and the public – but how do you go about demonstrating this change? This workshop will guide you through the best evaluation processes showing you when, why and crucially how, to use evaluation to give you reliable and clear data. Demonstrate success to funders; record Impact for REF; learn how to improve your processes and have a better understanding of the people you are connecting with.

The workshop will be followed by the option of a one-to-one consultation to discuss individual and project specific evaluation approaches. These will take place after the workshop and last for 20 min. Please contact the ER team for information on how to book this session.

Working across dozens of institutions and subject areas he has improved the reach, profile and impact of research engagement in almost every academic discipline.

As a specialist in evaluation Jamie provides consultancy services to charities and universities helping them to demonstrate their impact and to understand their audiences and stakeholders. He consulted on dozens of REF impact case studies in the latest round and works regularly with the vast majority of the Russell Group Universities.
