This weekly class is intended to help research students in Divinity to develop their skills in reading French documents they need to deal with in their research. Each session will be divided into two parts: The first part will consist of grammar, tasks to develop insight into the reading process, help with dealing with complex sentence structures, academic conventions, abbreviations, etc. The second part will be devoted to the translation of original French texts from different periods and covering a range of topics. Each week you will be asked to attempt a translation into English of a French passage. For more detailed information about the course please visit our website. Next, we will present the alignment step, quantification of expression and differential expression analysis. For downstream analysis we will focus on tools available through the Bioconductor project for manipulating and analysing bulk RNA-seq. The training room is located on the first floor and there is currently no wheelchair or level access available to this level. Before undertaking any piece of primary research it’s important to be aware of as much of the existing literature as possible. A systematic literature review can also be a research end in itself. And it’s not something to be taken lightly. But how can you be sure you’re being as rigorous as necessary? How can you manage the references you find, document the process, and also know when to stop searching? This session assumes attendees have already had prior introductory training in literature searching. It is a prerequisite that you have attended either Introduction to Literature Searching (if you are a University of Cambridge staff member or student) or Getting the Best Results - Improving Your Database Searching (if you are an NHS staff member). Exceptions will be made if you received similar training from another department or university - please contact us if you have any questions about prerequisites. UPDATE: Please note that this session is taking place remotely, not in the Medical Library as previously advertised. Please do not go to the Medical Library training room. We offer expert, impartial advice relating all things process improvement and want to support our colleagues on their own continuous improvement journeys. Please note, these sessions are informal, 1-2-1 meetings where colleagues can ask for advice and guidance from the Simplifying our Processes team. These are not workshops or taught sessions. The Simplifying our Processes team will be available 9-10 and 4-5 every Tuesday and Friday - each hour can be split into two sessions of 30 minutes depending on demand. |

Fire Warden (classroom) training will give clear instruction of the roles of designated fire wardens and assist fire safety managers to comply with current fire safety legislation. Use of Fire Extinguisher (outdoor practical) training provides hands on experience in the correct use of portable fire extinguishers. |

The course is not about presentation skills, it is to master the mechanics of managing the smooth transition between different presenters and content. The Fire Safety Awareness section (classroom based) will raise attendees' awareness of fire safety and assist fire safety managers to comply with current fire safety legislation. University staff working in embedded accommodation at Addenbrooke's Hospital should attend the NHS' fire training for its tenants. This will cover general fire safety awareness specific to the main hospital. (See related courses below for further details.) |

Virtual Writing Retreats

Do you have a deadline coming up or a piece of writing that’s long overdue? Or maybe some data analysis that keeps slipping to the bottom of your to-do list? Our online retreats give you time, peace, and space to think and write. Each session will provide a friendly and constructive environment in which to meet like-minded peers, discuss challenges, and work in a focused way using the Pomodoro technique. These virtual retreats are being hosted collaboratively across several institutions to encourage researchers across career stages and institutions to come together in a sustainable writing environment. The retreats will take place several times per month throughout the academic year and you can attend as many as you like (within booking limits for each session). |
