This course gives an introduction to linear mixed effects models, also called multi-level models or hierarchical models, for the purposes of using them in your own research or studies. We emphasise the practical skills and key concepts needed to work with these models, using applied examples and real datasets. After completing the course, you should have:

This training is intended for staff and post graduate students who regularly use DSE to help prevent or reduce the risk of possible health problems arising from computer use. The training is also aimed at those responsible within departments for assisting with the DSE risk assessment process. The course will provide an understanding of the DSE Regulations 1992 (as amended 2002) and discuss employer's and employee's duties regarding the assessment of DSE workstations. There will be theory and a practical demonstration. The training will allow time to discuss some of the common health problems and concerns that may be associated with poor workstation set-up with examples of possible solutions. |

Virtual Writing Retreats

Do you have a deadline coming up or a piece of writing that’s long overdue? Or maybe some data analysis that keeps slipping to the bottom of your to-do list? Our online retreats give you time, peace, and space to think and write. Each session will provide a friendly and constructive environment in which to meet like-minded peers, discuss challenges, and work in a focused way using the Pomodoro technique. These virtual retreats are being hosted collaboratively across several institutions to encourage researchers across career stages and institutions to come together in a sustainable writing environment. The retreats will take place several times per month throughout the academic year and you can attend as many as you like (within booking limits for each session). A course to take you through conference poster design, with tips and resources to help with the content and presentation in order to ensure you communicate your research effectively. The course will cover where to source good quality, free graphics, how to include references in your poster, and advice about how best to present it at a conference. Whether you create, receive or collect this information, you will need to look after it properly. Managing digital information properly is a complex issue. Doing it correctly from the start could save you a lot of time and hassle when preparing a publication or writing up your thesis. |

Have you heard of myHR but are not really sure what it’s about? Join this short session, suitable for employees across all staff groups and areas of the University, to find out about the HR Transformation Programme, the reasons for change and the benefits that myHR, our new HR and Payroll system, will bring for us all. After an introduction to the programme, a short demo will show you around myHR from the point of view of an employee and as a manager of others. Please note that the Conversation Hours will be delivered online This conversation hour offers learners with an independent conversational ability (B2 level upwards) a chance to practise speaking French with others in a relaxed and informal group led by a native-speaker facilitator. The content of the sessions is decided by the participants, with members taking turns to propose a topic and source materials (newspaper articles, web-links, videos etc.) to use as a basis for discussion. The groups are ideal for those who wish to retain or improve upon the language skills they already have or for those studying for a language degree who would like another forum for interaction at advanced level. This course is mainly aimed at undergraduate students writing their first thesis, but is also suitable for staff who need to write a long document. It is designed to give an insight and hands on practice into the more advanced features of Microsoft Word that are relevant to producing substantial reports.

This workshop will introduce the technique of Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) to Physical Sciences researchers who are keen to evaluate the use of this technique for their work. With the increasing emphasis on sustainability from all fronts, researchers are now expected to reflect on the sustainability impact of their work, and understand the choices that might be available to them. This half day workshop will introduce the use of EcoInvent software for conducting LCA analyses. The workshop will be held in hybrid format - the in person attendees will have a room reserved in the Maxwell Centre, with refreshments available during the break. Online attendees will attend via zoom. When making your booking please make sure you are booking for the correct format i.e. in person or online. The workshop will be led by NanoDTC alumnus Dr Taylor Uekert, who is currently at the Circular Economy for Energy Materials Team at the National Renewable Energy Laboratory in Colorado.
